What is lighting? Is it a crossroads of architecture, technology, art, sociology and psychology? Undeniably, it attracts a special type of people, passionate about light.
Last week for two days, the Creative Lighting Department of ITMO University in St. Petersburg, Russia turned into an Enlightenment ground for students and lighting enthusiasts who came to listen to the Master Program graduates defending their theses. Our very own Elena Belova was invited to be the Head of the State Exam Committee that also included other leading experts in the field of lighting design: Natalya Bystryantseva, Ph.D. in Architecture, Associate Professor CLD ITMO, Andrey Balaev, Ph.D. in Technology, Associate Professor CLD ITMO, Mikhail Ivanov, lighting designer, Head of Urban Lighting Department in consulting bureau KB Strelka, Ilya Philippov, leading engineer of Prom-Svet.
The themes ranged from research of the influence of spectral characteristics of artificial light sources on colour perception of people with colour vision impairment; influence of light parameters of pedestrian zones on the user’s sense of safety; study of photometric influence of adaptive lighting systems on the reduction of stress in multi-user space, to name but a few. Overall, 16 theses were successfully presented to the Exam Committee and the public.
