About the building
Kant Island or Kneiphof is majestically situated in the Pregolya River in Kaliningrad. Today there is a park of incredible beauty with numerous stone sculptures and a monumental building - the Cathedral Church. In the 14th century there was a town that became the center of all trades and saw many joyful and sad events. In August 1944 the British bombed the town and erased it from the face of the earth. Only the cathedral remained of all the buildings and remnants of other buildings were used for restoration of Leningrad. Today the Cathedral Church on Kant Island in Königsberg is the city’s hallmark and its main showplace.
Lighting concept and goals
Kant Island is a culturally significant place of attraction for residents and visitors of the city. Based on the main purpose of the island, the lighting design idea is the creation of a whole lighting structure with the cathedral as the dominant feature, including an architectural one. The idea also involves the creation in the park of artistic images and associations that help delineate the space and make it more intimate.
Project implementation
The walls of the cathedral are illuminated using IntiSTARK luminaires with specially designed 15a40° optics ensuring a most uniform flood lighting of the facade. Some equipment is made in a special version including RGBA color model with Amber diodes creating an amber glow.
IntiBEAM luminaires with a narrow beam are used to illuminate the clock. Color patterns based on RGB solutions realized in IntiSTARK spotlights were created for several groups of trees to favorably emphasize the extensive unchanging crowns of the green zone. On the left side there are trees illuminated mainly with an accent red color harmoniously matching the facade of the Cathedral Church located there.
IntiGROUND, KUB и RAY luminaires of different versions and optical properties ranging from luminaires with narrow 7° optics and monochrome optics to wide luminaires with 80° optics and RGBW diodes are used for illuminating architectural landscape elements. All RAY and KUB luminaires have special anti-blinding grilles integrated directly into the luminaire body and forming its integral part. The luminaires are mounted on specially designed anti-vandal racks to be installed in gardens and parks.
LACE luminaires rolled in the form of a coil are used as decorative and operational lighting.
Control system
A unique LightCAD based control system was formed for the project to ensure the luminaires interworking according to DMX-512 and DALI standards. The operator’s position is located in the technical room of the cathedral, from where all the lighting equipment of the park can be controlled. The control system and the project take into account the level of light pollution and impact on the park area environment. The system is switched on/off on a daily routine basis including the scenarios involving a low illumination of the park as a green expanse element. The system also takes into account changes in the natural illumination during the year and adjusts the light flux for the season when there is no foliage.
