The Symbol of Hope, a monument to Norilsk’s aviation history, is a retired AN-26 aircraft mounted on the site of the city’s original runway, once the vital link between this remote Arctic outpost and the rest of Russia. Today, the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant occupies the land where Norilsk’s first airport once stood, but the AN-26, now permanently grounded after years of service, remains as a powerful tribute to the city’s past. In 2024, the Symbol of Hope took on new meaning with the installation of dramatic architectural lighting, ensuring its presence shines through even the darkest polar nights.
The lighting system features two distinct settings. On weekdays, "flight mode" cycles between ten minutes of steady white light and a dynamic, animated display in Norilsk Nickel’s signature colors, mimicking an aircraft’s takeoff. Weekends transform the monument into a vibrant spectacle, with a dazzling full-color light show that makes it a true standout landmark.
Built to withstand Norilsk’s brutal winters, the INTILED control system and 30 LED spotlights (26 fullcolour IntiSTARK RGBW and 4 classic RAY models) operate flawlessly in temperatures as low as -60°C. The illumination not only highlights the aircraft’s imposing size but also deepens its role as a cultural touchstone for the community. Now, whether under the midnight sun or the endless winter darkness, locals and visitors alike can pause to appreciate this striking monument, a testament to the resilience and ambition that built the North.
