Ben Rung Bridge, Vietnam

  • Project:
    Ben Rung Bridge
  • Location:
Hai Phong – Quang Ninh, Vietnam
  • Equipment Supply and Installation:
    HDP Vietnam Technology
  • Project Consultant:
    TECCO1
  • Lighting Design Documentation:
    APECO
  • Lighting Concept:
The architectural lighting scheme for Ben Rung Bridge was designed to highlight the scale of the structure and its distinctive geometry. The lighting draws attention to the three V-shaped pylons, stay cables and long structural elements, giving the bridge a clearly defined silhouette after dark.
The aim was to complement the bridge’s architecture without creating visual clutter. Careful consideration was given to luminaire placement and beam direction to achieve a striking nighttime appearance while maintaining comfort and safety for road users.
  • Project Details:
Ben Rung Bridge spans the Da Bach River in northern Vietnam, connecting the city of Hai Phong with Quang Ninh Province. The bridge has a total length of 1,865.3 m and features three V-shaped reinforced concrete pylons, each 23.3 m high, which give the structure its distinctive profile.
The main lighting objective was to highlight the bridge’s key structural elements and emphasize its scale. The design had to account for the considerable distances between the luminaires and the illuminated surfaces, the complex geometry of the structure and strict road safety requirements.
The lighting scheme combines several types of INTILED luminaires, each serving a specific purpose.
IntiSLIM ILF60 linear luminaires were used to illuminate the elongated structural elements, creating continuous lines of light that accentuate the bridge’s geometry. High-output LINE ILF30 linear luminaires were selected for the bridge supports, directing light along the larger structural components.
IntiSTARK floodlights provide accent lighting. The IMF98 models illuminate large structural elements at greater distances, while the IMF72 models highlight the stay cables. Together with the linear luminaires, they define the bridge’s geometry and create a cohesive lighting composition.
One of the key project requirements was to prevent glare for drivers and ensure safe, comfortable lighting conditions. Lighting calculations took into account luminaire positions, beam directions and traffic conditions. Particular attention was paid to precise floodlight aiming, allowing the architectural features to stand out without causing discomfort to road users.
Equipment reliability was another important consideration, given the constant dynamic loads experienced by bridge structures. The luminaires were installed using vibration-resistant brackets designed to withstand regular structural movement. High-output floodlights were also fitted with tamper-resistant mounting brackets and security fasteners to prevent unauthorized removal.
The equipment selection and mounting solutions also had to account for high humidity and the corrosive conditions associated with the river environment. The mounting components and protective features of the luminaires were designed to ensure reliable performance under demanding operating conditions.
Several companies contributed to the project. TECCO1 served as the project consultant, while APECO was responsible for preparing the lighting design documentation. HDP Vietnam Technology, INTILED’s official partner in Vietnam, supplied the equipment and installed the lighting system.
The architectural lighting gives Ben Rung Bridge a distinctive nighttime appearance, combining architectural aesthetics, road safety and the long-term reliability of the lighting system.
